If not don't sweat it, all Bareboat Charter Outfits have highly trained personal on site that will Train you for approximately 1 or 2 days prior to your departure from their home port. We suggest taking a Boating Course to really prepare yourself and to go one step further get your Captain's License. If you complete this course you will really have a more pleasurable Journey out on the open Sea. But if you still don't feel comfortable at the Helm of the Yacht you can hire a Captain/Skipper that can assist as you need or when you want to spend more time with Friends and Family. Your call, remember this is a Bareboat Charter where you're in control! Yachts come in many forms and sizes. Once you determine how many people are Cruising you can then chose what size Yacht everyone will feel comfortable with. The Yacht could either be a Motor Yacht, Sailboat or a Catamaran which could be either under Power or under Sail.
Once aboard the Yacht while still at the Docks, the Bareboat Charter Captain/Skipper will go over all specifics of the Vessel including Electronics, Charts, Safety, First-Aid, Weather information during the Cruise and other information important to have a Safe and Pleasurable Voyage. Yacht Charter details: this is the information you need to know prior to cutting the check and making the commitment.- Payment Plan –
if needed, work out a plan to pay for your Charter over time. Find out the method payment accepted. Some Charter Companies charge fees for using credit cards ask if using a check or wire transfer will save on this fee.
- Security Deposit – find out this amount so there are no surprises later when you check your bill plus are they refundable or NON-refundable?
- Travel Insurance –
this is a must. Purchase this so in the event you can’t make it and have to cancel you get your money back for airline tickets, Charter deposit and any other upfront payment needed to confirm your trip.
- Yacht Insurance -
this is also a must. Like a car rental this insurance covers you in the event you damage the Yacht or Sailboat in anyway such as hitting bottom, losing or damaging equipment, scrapping against a dock, etc…
- Included in your Charter –
find out what is included such as emergency support 24/7, snorkeling equipment, towels and linens, VAT and harbor taxes, cooking gas, dinghy and etc…- Not Included in your Charter –
this is important as well watch for airport transfers, Fuel, Provisions (food and drink), departure cleaning (available for a fee), mooring fees, personal travel insurance, etc…
- Skippered or Crewed Check-In –
could be anywhere from 3pm to 6pm. Procedure is minimal, a walk-through of the Yacht, accommodate yourself and the skipper briefs you on the itinerary, basic Yacht operations, etc…
- Bareboat Check-In -
can take about two-hours, typical Bareboat items covered: vessel orientation, operations of sails, technical orientation, map orientation, inventory check, itinerary information, etc…
- Check-out -
could take less than an hour but a Bareboat Charter may take longer since the Charter Company will conduct an inspection prior to your exiting the vessel.
- Provisions –
(food and beverage) check with the Charter Company, they should be able to provide you with a list of items you can select from where they shop for you and place in the Yacht for your arrival (usually this is free).
Daily items such as dairy products, fruit, bread, meat and fish can be replenished at each port. - Transfers –
Charter Company should either have an airport shuttle or should be able to recommend for you. Ask the cost and the currency accepted for transfer before getting to the destinations’ airport.
- Cancellation –
again purchase the Travel Insurance, if you do not get the Travel Insurance, canceling could be costly. Get the details from the Charter Outfit before giving your payment.
