Boat Trailer
Need to Trailer Your Boat? Got the Truck or SUV and the equipment to do it?
Trailering a Boat provides you the freedom to explore new lakes and rivers or coastal waterways and this is why Trailering is so popular today. With nearly 85% of the Boats today under 26' feet you can see why this is the most popular mode of storage and transporting.

Yachting-n-Boating.com will provide information you need to for Trailer maintenance and certification, plus does your vehicle have the horsepower to tow your Boat and getting the right towing equipment. Trailer Maintenance: Routine maintenance of your Trailer is a must. This can be done with the Boat on or off the Trailer. Most of the Boat Trailers today are made of aluminum so this material is resistant to rusting or corrosion however your bearing and electrical equipment is not. Check your bearing every month or so and add grease as you see it's visibly dry. Do this inspection by removing the center caps. Once a year those bearing should be cleaned and re-packed with axle grease. With this help of someone else check the brake lights and turn signals. Replace light bulbs as needed. After every trip to the Boat Ramp be sure to hose down the Trailer to clean it of saltwater and/or debris before storing the Boat.Trailer Certification: The National Marine Manufacturers Association has developed a Trailer certification program to help Boat Trailer manufacturers comply with established industry standards and federal safety regulations, and to help inform the public of such compliance when purchasing trailers. Ensure the Trailer you have meet this certification program. Towing Horsepower: It maybe time to trade in the family wagon or your sports car for a truck or SUV, (unless of course your towing a Personal Watercraft) but before you do be sure to find out what the 'dry weight' of the Boat is (you can get this from the owners manual) and with that information ask your truck or SUV dealer which vehicle would be best. If you have a truck or SUV already read your owners manual to find your towing capacity. Tip: take the 'dry weight' of the Boat and add a few hundred pounds since the dry weight does not calculate gas, water and equipment on-board. Tow Package: Do you have a ball hitch on your bumper? Well this probably wouldn't be good enough for towing a few thousand pounds. You'll need a Towing Package set-up that would be connected directly to the frame of the Boat. There are 4 classes of rated trailer hitches according to gross vehicle weight rating system; one has a maximum of 2,000 pounds; two has a maximum of 3,500 pounds; three has a maximum of 5,000 pounds and four has a maximum of 10,000 pounds. The weight of your boat, trailer, and equipment should never exceed this capacity. Check out U-haul, Draw-Tite and others on the right Tow Package for you.
